Who We Are

The story of Ellis Piano begins with a dream… the American Dream. David Ellis always wanted to start his own business. Celia Conaway hired David to work summers at a local piano store while still in high school. Later in 1983, David began his entrepreneurial journey by hiring Miss Conaway as general manager for his own new venue.

At the age of 26, David borrowed the money to open Ellis Piano and Organ Warehouse, Inc., in a 1300 square foot location in the Hoover Village. The store was one of eight piano stores operating in Birmingham during an economically tough time. The entire inventory consisted of eleven vertical pianos and a single grand piano. Although times were tough, Ellis Piano was able to grow over time and eventually occupied seven units at the Hoover Village before moving to our current location. In 1988, David was selected as a “Top 40 Businessman Under Age 40” by the Birmingham Business Journal.

Today, Ellis Piano has become one of the largest piano stores in the Southeast. Now located in the Green Valley Village in Hoover on Highway 31, the store has nearly 28,000 square feet of space ample to showcase hundreds of acoustic pianos, a wide array of digital pianos and a comprehensive sheet music department.

Ellis Piano represents many manufacturers including handmade pianos like Fazioli, Bosendorfer, Shigeru Kawai and Schimmel. Ellis Piano also carries some of the world’s most popular piano manufacturers such as Yamaha and Kawai, as well as top brands in digitals like Yamaha, Yamaha Clavinova, Roland, Kawai, Nord and Dexibell.

David’s dream continues today as a new generation of the Ellis family is an important part of the staff. David’s sons, Jason and Zack, continue the store’s tradition of offering a large selection of top quality products backed by expert service.
