Birmingham, AL Music Store | David Ellis History | Ellis Piano

The story of Ellis Piano begins with a dream…the American Dream. David Ellis always wanted to have his own business. While a high school student, David was hired by Celia Conaway to work summers at a local piano store. In 1983, David began his hopes by hiring in turn Miss Conaway as his general manager for his new venue. At age 26, David opened the Ellis Piano Store in a 1300 square foot location in Hoover Village, using borrowed money. This store was one of eight piano stores operating in Birmingham during the economically tough times of that year. The entire inventory consisted of eleven vertical pianos and a single grand piano. Successful growth over time resulted in many expansions at Hoover Village until Ellis Piano occupied seven of the units there. In 1988, David was selected as a “Top 40 Businessman Under Age 40” by the Birmingham Business Journal.

Today, in its 32nd year, Ellis Piano has become one of the largest piano stores in the Southeast. Now located in Green Valley Village, the store has nearly 28,000 square feet of space, ample to showcase hundreds of pianos, a wide array of digitals and a comprehensive music department.

Many piano manufacturers are represented there, including the handmade Bosendorfer, Shigeru Kawai, and Schimmel Pianos, and the world’s most popular piano manufacturers, Yamaha and Kawai. We carry the top brands in digitals like: Yamaha and Yamaha Clavinova, Roland, Kawai, Korg, and Nord.

David’s Dream continues today as a new generation of the Ellis family is an important part of the staff. David’s three oldest sons, Jason, Cory, and Zack continue the store’s tradition of offering a large selection of the top quality products backed by top notch service.
